Aakash Tablet may bridge the digital divide in India

Some people may scoff at the idea of buying or using a low powered tablet, but you have to realize the fact that the easy affordability, availability of mobile phones and cell phone networks,  have led to massive penetration of cell phone and allied services in India. People who could not dream of owning a telephone a couple of decades ago,  now move around with a cell phone in their pocket.
And for a person who haven’t handled tablets , computers (let alone tablets with CPU’s pumping at 1 GHz or more), the speed will not make much of a difference, instead Aakash can very well bridge the digital divide and bring technology, internet and computing to the masses.

One Aakash Tablet for each student?

If the government decides to put one tablet in the hands of each student and provides all text books in digital form, it will save hundreds of crores of rupees spent on printing and subsiding text books for schools and colleges and students in remote parts of the country do not have to be without text books for the better part of their academic session.
GPRS and Wireless internet access also might become cheaper when you have millions of people with the means of accessing the Internet on a full blown browser.

How to order the Aakash Android Tablet for Rs. 1138

A circular has already been issued to all affiliated colleges and departments, any students who wants to buy the tablet can place an order with their college. Just go to the office or your department and ask for the booking form for Aakash tablet, fill it up and book your tablet. Payment has to be made to your college. The Aakash tablet is the poorer cousin of the Ubislate 7, which is comparatively powerful with a faster 700 Mhz CPU and Android Gingerbread 2.3.
